UPSC Geologists’ Examination 2011

A competitive examination for recruitment to the posts mentioned below will be held by the Union Public Service Commission commencing from 3rd December 2011 in accordance with the rules published by the Ministry of Mines.

Name of the Post & Number of Vacancies:

  1. Category I: Posts in the Geological Survey of India, Ministry of Mines

    Geologist, Group ‘A': 300 vacancies
  2. Category II: Posts in the Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources

    a) Jr. Hydrogeologists (Scientist B), Group ‘A': 7 vacancies
    b) Assistant Hydrogeologists, Group ‘B': 30 vacancies

Important Dates

  • Opening date for online registration: 20 August 2011
  • Closing date for online registration: 19 September 2011 till 11.59 PM
  • Closing date for Offline registration (for candidates residing in remote areas): 26 September 2011
  • Date of written examination: 3 December 2011

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

For Geologists Grade ‘A' in Geological Survey of India

  • Master's degree in Geological Science or Geology or Applied Geology or Geo- Exploration or Mineral Exploration or Engineering Geology or Marine Geology or Earth Science and Resource Management or Oceanography and Coastal Areas Studies or Petroleum Geosciences or Geochemistry from a recognised University
  • Candidates who have appeared at the final examinations of the minimum educational qualification or are awaiting their result, may also apply for admission to the Examination and in such case his or her admission to the relevant year Examination shall be provisional and subject to obtaining minimum educational qualification.
  • A candidate who is otherwise qualified but who possesses the Master's degree from a foreign University approved by the Government may also be admitted to the Examination by the Commission.

For Junior Hydrgeologists (Scientist B), Group ‘A' and Assistant Hydrgeologists Group ‘B' in Central Ground Water Board

  • Master's degree in Geology or Applied Geology or Marine Geology from a recognised University
  • Master's degree in Hydrogeology from a recognised University

Note: Candidate possessing common qualifications in both the categories can apply for both.

Age Limit (as on 1 January): Minimum 21 years; Maximum 32 years

Application Fee: Candidates applying Online are required to pay a reduced fee of Rs 100 either by remitting the money in any Branch of SBI by cash, or by using net banking facility of SBI or by using Visa/ Master Credit/ Debit Card.

Candidates, from remote areas, applying Offline through New Common Application form (Form-E) are required to pay a fee of Rs 200 through Central Recruitment Fee Stamp only of requisite denomination (NOT postage stamps) which may be obtained from the post office and affixed on the Application Form.

Female/ SC/ ST/ PH candidates are exempted from payment of Fee. (OBC Candidates are required to pay full fees)

Selection procedure:  The competitive examination for the Geologists' Examination 2011 comprises of the following written examination.

A)    For Category I Geologists Grade ‘A' in Geological Survey of India
 
   Part I: The written examination consisting of the following papers each of 3 hours duration:-

  • General English (100 marks)
  • Geology Paper I (200 marks)
  • Geology Paper II (200 marks)
  • Geology Paper III (200 marks)

    Part II: Interview for Personality Test of such candidates as may be called by the Commission (Maximum marks: 200 marks)

B)    For Category I Geologists Grade ‘A' in Geological Survey of India

   Part I: The written examination consisting of the following papers each of 3 hours duration:-

  • General English (100 marks)
  • Geology Paper I (200 marks)
  • Geology Paper II (200 marks)
  • Hydrogeology (200 marks)

    Part II: Interview for Personality Test of such candidates as may be called by the Commission (Maximum marks: 200 marks)

Note: Candidates competing for posts under both Category I and Category II will be required to offer all the five subjects mentioned above. 

The examination in all the subjects will be of conventional (Essay) type.

How to Apply

Online Application

Candidates are required to apply online using the link http://www.upsconline.nic.in/ Detailed instructions for filling up Online Applications are available on the above mentioned website.

Offline Application

  1. Candidates residing in certain Remote Areas can exercise the option of applying through Offline mode also by using the New Common Application Form (Form E) being used for examinations conducted by the Commission.
  2. This Application Form along with an Information Brochure containing general instructions for filling up the form, an acknowledgement card, and an envelope for sending the application is obtainable from the designated Head Post Offices/ Post Offices throughout the country against the cash payment of Rs 30 (Rupees Thirty only).
  3. Form should be purchased from the designated Post Offices only and not from any other agency. This Form can be used only once and for only one examination.
  4. Since this Form is electronically scannable, due care should be taken to fill up the Application Form, correctly.
  5. The duly filled in Application Form and the Acknowledgement Card should then be mailed in the special envelope supplied with the Information Brochure. The candidates should also write the name of examination viz. "Geologists' Examination, 2011" on the envelope before despatching it to "Controller of Examinations, Union Public Service Commission, Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi-110069".
  6. Candidates should note that all Offline Applications from remote areas only will be received by Post/Speed Post only and no application will be received by Hand or by Courier.
