22nd Asian Athletics Championships: India on day 1 wins two gold in haul of seven medals

India on 6 July 2017 bagged seven medals including two gold in the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.With these seven medals on the day one of the championships, India managed to sit at the top position in the medal tally.

India wins 7 medals on day one of Asian Athletics Championships=

The two medals were won by Manpreet Kaur and G Lakhsmanan.

Shot putter Manpreet Kaur opened India's gold medal account with a career second best throw of 18.28m. Her best record was created with is a throw of 18.86m at the Asian Grand Prix in China earlier in 2017.

On the other hand, long distance runner G Lakhsmanan gave India the second gold with an unexpected win in men's 5000m race at the athletic meet.

Olive Ridley to be mascot of Asian Athletics Championships

Other five medals (silver and bronze) were won in women’s long jump and men’s discus throw, women's 5000m race and javelin throw events respectively.

Heavyweights China ended the day in the second position with one gold and two silver medals. The Asian Championships winner gets an automatic berth for the World Championships to be held in London from 4 August to 13 August 2017.

22nd Asian Athletics Championships

The 22nd Asian Athletics Championships was inaugurated at Kalinga Stadium in Odisha capital Bhubaneswar on 5 July 2017. The championship will see the participation of over 800 athletes and officials from 44 countries in Asia. The championship is the largest sporting event Odisha is organising.

As per reports, around 42 track and field events (21 for men and 21 for women) will be held in the championship and 20 world champions are likely to take part.

Participants of the inaugural ceremony of the Athletics championships were Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and central ministers among others. The opening ceremony of the championship saw a cultural extravaganza.

Mascot of the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships: Olly, the Olive Ridley, a sea turtle was declared the mascot of the Championship.

The Asian Athletics Championships is an event organised by the Asian Athletics Association.

Kalinga Stadium and how it prepared for the championships

The multipurpose Kalinga Stadium has been transformed into a world-class track and field facility adhering to the norms of the International Association of Athletic Federation within a record period of 90 days.
