Assam Government prepared a draft proposal to revise minimum wages for workers and employees engaged under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. The wages are to be revised under the relevant provisions of Minimum Wages Act, 1948.
The minimum rates of wages fixed for different categories included- 208 rupees per day for skilled work and 150 rupees per day for semi-skilled and unskilled supervisory work. A minimum rate of 130 rupees per day has been proposed for unskilled workers who are engaged in agriculture, construction or maintenance of roads, building operation, stone breaking, flood control, irrigation and public health engineering.
The workers and the employees shall be entitled to variable dearness allowance to the extent of 75 per cent in addition to the rates of wages as per the all India consumer price index for industrial workers.
