Meghalaya chief minister D D Lapang submitted his resignation to Congress president Sonia Gandhi on 18 April 2010 thereby ending a political crisis in the state. Lapang admitted to IANS that he had lost the support of the majority of the 28 Congress legislators. This admission was made after Mukul M. Sangma was unanimously chosen his successor by 21 of 28 party legislators on 17 April 2010. Sangma is presently a deputy chief minister in the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) coalition government.
