On Wednesday, March 5, the central government authorized the ₹4,081 crore Kedarnath ropeway project. This important project is anticipated to reduce the 8–9 hour travel time from Sonprayag to Kedarnath to just 36 minutes.
According to a statement from the government, the Kedarnath ropeway project would be created using the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) method, with a total capital expenditure of ₹4,081.28 crore.
Hemkund Pilgrim in Just 36 Minutes!
The Hemkund Sahib ropeway project, which will be 12.4 km long and cost Rs 2,730 crore, was also approved by the cabinet. At the moment, getting to the Hemkund Sahib Ji from Govindghat is a strenuous 21-kilometer ascent that can be done on foot, on ponies, or in palanquins. The 12.9-kilometer ropeway project could be a blessing for pilgrims who spend hours walking to Kedarnath because it will just take them about 36 minutes to get there.
The proposed ropeway will guarantee all-weather last-mile connectivity between Govindghat and Hemkund Sahib Ji and will be convenient for pilgrims and visitors to Hemkund Sahib Ji as well as tourists visiting the Valley of Flowers.
Kedarnath Ropeway under Parvatmala Pariyojana
The Kedarnath ropeway project is being built as part of the Parvatmala Pariyojana, a National Ropeways Development Program.
With approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), a 12.9-kilometer ropeway project will be built from Sonprayag to Kedarnath. The project will be built using the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) methodology. The project, which intends to increase tourism in isolated highland places, was first announced in October 2022 as part of the "Parvatmala Pariyojana" program.
Ropeway to be Built Under PPP
The ropeway is expected to be built in a public-private partnership, according to a PIB official release. It will be built using the most cutting-edge Tri-cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology, which has a design capacity of 1,800 passengers per hour per direction (PPHPD), or 18,000 passengers per day.
