Karnataka government through its notification dated 3 December 2011, announced bestowing the Basava Sri Puraskar 2010 upon Social Activist Medha Patkar. Patkar, however, refused to accept the award citing the Karnataka government’s involvement into massive mining scams as the reason.
Basava award is conferred by the Department of Kannada and Culture in the name of revolutionary saint poet, philosopher Shri Basaveshwara of 12th century who promoted social change, reform and communal harmony in the society.
Medha Patkar is a leading social activist of the country who has spearheaded several people’s movement. She runs the organisation National Alliance of People's Movements (NAPM).
