As the BJP-led NDA government prepares for its oath ceremony this Sunday, June 9, the people are more curious about the names of the leaders who will be taking oath along with PM Modi as Cabinet Ministers. Since the BJP was not able to touch the magical number of 272, the allies are more vocal over their demands on the number of ministries and portfolios they want for their party.
In order to tackle this distribution, BJP has come up with a formula of “4:1”. As per this formula, a party will receive one cabinet minister for every four Members of Parliament. It is expected that the BJP itself will retain the major ministries like Home, Defence, Finance, and External Affairs. However, the allies will get the position of Minister of State (MoS) of these ministries.
Demands of the NDA Allies
Nitish Kumar-led Janta Dal United (JDU) got the third-highest number of seats in the NDA alliance after BJP and Telugu Desam Party (TDP). The party has put forward the demand for important ministries like Railways, Agriculture, and Finance in the government. On the other hand, TDP has demanded the post of Lok Sabha Speaker and two cabinet ministers. Similarly, other allies are also expected to make further demands as the discussion for the formation of a new government continues.
If BJP goes by its formula of 4:1 while distributing the ministries and portfolios to the candidates, JDU who won 12 seats in this Lok Sabha election will likely get the posts of three cabinet ministers and two MoS. TDP is expected to be allotted the posts of two cabinet ministers and one MoS.
The Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas faction, with five MPs, may receive one cabinet minister and one MoS post in the Modi 3.0 government, on the other hand, the Shiv Sena-Shinde faction, with seven MPs, may receive the post of two cabinet ministers. The allies of the BJP in the NDA government are certain to make more demands in the future.
Expected Cabinet Ministers and their Portfolio
Although the BJP was not able to get the full majority in this Lok Sabha election, it will still try to retain the big ministries like Home, Finance, and Defense ministry for its own leaders. The allies of the NDA have put forward their demands, and negotiations are still in progress.
