State Bank of India (SBI) inaugurated the bank’s first wind power project in Coimbatore on 23 April 2010. The bank decided to set up windmills for captive use to substitute polluting thermal power. This would be first of its kind in the financial sector. In the beginning the bank would install 10 wind mills in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu to wheel the power generated to high tension (HT) power consumption points at the bank's specified offices and branches in these States. The first 15 MW project consisting of 10 units of Suzlon's S-82 1.5 MW wind turbine generators would be installed across Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
