S.C. Chetal took over as Director of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) at Kalpakkam on 29 April 2011. Before taking over as IGCAR Director, Chetal was its Director, Reactor Engineering Group. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from New Delhi in 1970 and joined the prestigious Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) Training School at Trombay. He joined IGCAR in 1971 after completion of one-year course at the BARC Training School.
At IGCAR he had engaged himself and had in Fast Reactor engineering. He contributed significantly to the design and development of the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) at Kalpakkam.
Chetal also played an important role in the research and development, design, engineering, materials and manufacturing technology of the PFBR.
The IGCAR is the architect of Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) programme and it has designed and developed the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) under construction at Kalpakkam.
