World Book and Copyright Day is observed every year on April 23rd by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote the power of reading, books, and copyright.

With this day, UNESCO aims to create a community so that readers across the world can connect with each other in turn combat isolation as much as possible.

During a time when the world is battling a pandemic, everything has come to a halt. Most schools are closed, people are confined to their homes, there are high chances of people being isolated from each other. UNESCO aims at leveraging the power of books and reading and forge our human connections with our friends, family, children, old, young, and combat isolation.

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, on World Book and Copyright Day 2021 said, "The power of books must be fully harnessed. We must ensure their access so that everyone can take refuge in reading, and by doing so, be able to dream, learn and reflect".

April 23 holds significance in the world of literature.

UNESCO declared in 1995 that April 23 will be observed as World Book and Copyright Day as this day also coincides with the death anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, and William Shakespeare. Hence, this day was chosen to pay tribute to books and prominent authors.
