International Zebra Day 2024: International Zebra Day is celebrated all around the world on January 31. Zebras are African equines with distinctive black-and-white striped coats. Their population has gone down by about 54% over the past three decades, according to the African Wildlife Foundation. So, International Zebra Day spreads knowledge about how you can support the conservation of this animal. The objectives of International Zebra Day are to preserve, maintain and grow the zebra population.
Types of Zebra
Zebras are the emblem of the African savanna, distinguished by their remarkable black and white stripes. Black flesh shows through the unstriped belly and legs, giving the coat the appearance of being white with black stripes. However, the coats of young foals are white and brown at birth, with the brown becoming darker with time. But, did you know that there are three different species of zebras, each with its special traits and difficulties?
Grévy's Zebra: The Grevy’s Zebra are the largest and most endangered species of Zebra. They are 6 feet tall with narrow and vertical stripes, like delicate brushstrokes, and donkey-like ears. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and poaching, only around 2,000 individuals of the species remain in the wild.
Mountain Zebra: The rock-loving fashionista, the mountain zebra lives on hillsides and slopes. In comparison to Grevy’s Zebra, their stripes are broader and more horizontal compared to the Grévy's, resembling bold brushstrokes. There are a total of 35,000 individuals, in a better position than Grévy's Zebra, but habitat fragmentation and hunting remain threats.
Plains Zebra: The most common and social zebra is the most widespread and abundant species, with populations estimated at over 150,000. They live in large, united herds and boast the most intricate stripe patterns, with a "shadow stripe" running down their backs. Despite the presence of good numbers, they face continuous threats like habitat loss and competition with livestock.
These three zebra species, though distinct, play an important role in the ecosystems. They graze on grasses, helping to maintain healthy grasslands, and their presence attracts predators, keeping other herbivore populations in check. Also, each zebra is an individual with a unique stripe pattern, making them all extraordinary members of the animal kingdom.
