What is the Controversy b/w Karnataka and Tamil Nadu?

Karnataka asserts that the project functions fundamentally as a balancing reservoir to secure urban drinking water needs which take legal priority, emphasise it will not reduce the mandatory water quantum legally bound to flow downstream to Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu opposes any upstream structural changes by arguing the dam will regularise and control water flows from intermediate catchments that were not sanctioned under the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT).

Latest Updates

The geopolitical conflict surrounding Mekedatu has intensified dramatically recently after the Supreme Court previously closed underlying legal suits, declaring that the Central Water Commission (CWC) and Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) hold the expert jurisdiction to evaluate project compliance. Tamil Nadu’s subsequent review petition against this stance was officially dismissed.

Karnataka Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar announced that a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being fast-tracked for Union approval, after which Karnataka intends to perform the Bhoomi Pooja (groundbreaking ceremony).

However, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay convened emergency meetings with water experts and legal luminaries ordering swift follow-up litigation and sent an urgent appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by stating that Karnataka’s unilateral steps a clear violation of prior Supreme Court verdicts and urging the Center to completely reject the project.
