The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced a welcome move for millions of Indians by increasing the UPI transaction limit for educational and healthcare payments to ₹5 lakh per day. This comes as a significant boost to digital payments and aims to facilitate larger transactions for educational fees and medical bills.

Previously, the maximum limit for such transactions was capped at ₹1 lakh per day. This increase to ₹5 lakh offers greater flexibility and removes the need for individuals to split larger payments into multiple transactions. This is especially beneficial for parents making school or college fee payments and those facing hefty medical bills.

Benefits of the Increased Limit:

  • Simplified Payment Process: Parents and students no longer need to worry about exceeding the limit while making fee payments. This simplifies the process and eliminates the need for multiple transactions or alternative payment methods.
  • Enhanced Convenience: The higher limit empowers individuals to pay for expensive medical treatments seamlessly through UPI. This can be particularly helpful in emergency situations where immediate access to funds is crucial.
  • Boosted Digital Adoption: The increased limit further encourages the adoption of digital payments for larger transactions, contributing to a cashless economy and promoting financial inclusion.
  • Reduced Transaction Costs: Utilising UPI for these payments eliminates the need for cash handling or dependence on traditional payment methods, potentially reducing associated transaction costs.

Additional Highlights:

This revised limit is applicable to all UPI apps and platforms.

The RBI has also increased the e-mandate limit for recurring payments, including insurance premiums and mutual fund subscriptions, from ₹2,000 to ₹1 lakh per month.

Users can opt out of this e-mandate facility at any time.

Overall, the RBI's move to raise the UPI transaction limit for education and healthcare is a positive step towards promoting cashless transactions and facilitating easier payments for essential services. This decision is likely to be appreciated by millions of individuals across India, further propelling the growth of digital payments in the country.
