The revised rates will take effect from the morning of May 15 2026 and will be applicable to all cities and states across India. This increase is linked to the increase in the price of crude oil in the world. This revision was unavoidable as oil marketing companies have been losing huge sums of money from the sale of oil as Brent crude oil went above $105 per barrel due to the conflict in West Asia.

Why Did the Government Hike Fuel Prices Now?

The tense global situation is the main cause of increase. Almost 85% of the crude oil consumed by India is imported and the payment is in US Dollar. As tensions in the Middle East grew, including the 2026 crisis over the Strait of Hormuz, global supply chains became more strained, and the price of Brent crude oil rose above $110 per barrel, which had a direct effect on domestic fuel prices.
Besides state owned oil companies such as IOC, BPCL and HPCL were suffering a loss of Rs 1,600-1,700 crore a day on petrol and diesel sales. This was simply not sustainable any longer.
Why Is the Price Different in Every State Even After the Same Hike?
This can be confusing for many people. The Rs 3 is a flat rate and the final price at the pump is still different from state to state. This is because the local regulations differ from one state to another, transportation costs vary and VAT (Value Added Tax) differs from state to state. The excise duty levied by the central government is uniform, whereas the state taxes differ.
This is the reason for the price difference of almost Rs 13 per litre of petrol in Hyderabad compared to that of Delhi on the same day.
