China is a vastly more diverse nation than some might think. According to linguistic research and the Ethnologue database, there are approximately 302 languages of living people in China.

These languages are members of some great language families:

1. Sino-Tibetan Family: The most numerous one, this group consists of Mandarin, Wu, Cantonese, Min, Hakka and Tibetan dialects.

About Mandarin Chinese Language

Mandarin is not just China's official language, but also of the entire world. Mandarin has over 920 million native speakers as well as more than 1.1 billion total speakers, all over the world.

Important GK Facts about Mandarin:

  • Mandarin is a tonal language which has 4 major tones plus a neutral tone. The same word has a different meaning when it is pronounced with a different tone.

  • The word mā means "mother," while mǎ means "horse" — same spelling, different tones, completely different meanings.

  • Mandarin uses a Romanisation system called Pinyin, introduced in 1958, to help learners pronounce Chinese characters using the Latin alphabet.

  • The language has no verb conjugation, no plural nouns, and no grammatical gender, making its grammar structure simpler than many European languages.

  • China uses Simplified Chinese script, while Taiwan and Hong Kong use Traditional Chinese script.

What Script Does China Use?

China has an official writing system known as the Simplified Chinese (Jiangtietizi). This script was implemented by the Chinese government in the 1950s and 1960s as an aspect of enhancing the level of literacy since the script minimised the number of strokes of complex traditional characters.

Ancient origin

Chinese writing is logographic; it tells one character per word, or something meaningful, not a sound like the system of the alphabet. It is estimated that it has more than 50,000 characters in existence, though an educated person is expected to be familiar with 8,000-10,000 characters, and a basic literacy person is expected to be familiar with 2,000-3000 characters.
