Assam Plans 32 More Medical Colleges, Targets 4,000 MBBS Seats By 2031

Assam is set to expand its medical education infrastructure, with the state government targeting 4,000 MBBS seats by 2031, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
The Chief Minister said Assam currently has 16 medical colleges and produces around 2,200 doctors annually. The government is also working on a long-term plan to establish 32 more medical colleges across the state.
Assam To Add 32 Medical Colleges
Sarma said the state has made significant progress in expanding medical education over the past few years. Assam, which had only three medical colleges for several decades, now has 16 medical colleges, he said.
The state also has AIIMS Guwahati and an ESIC Medical College, further expanding opportunities for medical education and training.
According to Sarma, the government aims to continue increasing the number of medical colleges and MBBS seats to meet the growing demand for doctors and strengthen the state's healthcare infrastructure.
MBBS Seats To Increase
The Chief Minister said Assam is targeting 4,000 MBBS seats by 2031 as part of its medical education expansion.
He highlighted the increase in the number of doctors being produced in the state, noting that annual doctor production has risen significantly from the levels seen earlier.
Sarma also stressed that increasing the number of medical graduates needs to be accompanied by adequate employment opportunities for them.
Focus On Healthcare Workforce
The expansion of medical colleges and MBBS seats is also linked to the state's efforts to strengthen its healthcare workforce.
Sarma referred to the Assam government's plan to deploy two doctors at each of the state's 5,000 sub-health centres. The move is aimed at improving the availability of medical professionals, particularly at the grassroots level.
The state government's long-term plan to establish more medical colleges is expected to increase access to medical education while also creating a larger pool of trained doctors for Assam's healthcare system.
