The Andhra Pradesh government is planning to ban social media access for children below the age of 13, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced on March 6 while addressing the state assembly.
According to the chief minister, the government intends to enforce the restriction within the next 90 days. The proposed move is aimed at protecting young children from the negative effects of excessive social media use and ensuring safer online environments for minors.
Naidu said the government is actively working on policies that would prevent children under 13 from accessing social media platforms. He emphasised that the state wants to take strong steps to safeguard children from online risks such as cyberbullying, harmful content, and excessive screen time.
The decision comes shortly after a similar announcement by the Karnataka government, which has also been exploring ways to regulate social media access for younger users.
During his address, Naidu stated that the government is also considering whether the ban should be extended to teenagers aged between 13 and 16 years. Discussions are currently underway to examine the possible impact and feasibility of such a step.
“Definitely, we will make sure that within 90 days those below 13 years of age are not able to use social media,” Naidu said while speaking in the assembly.
Officials said the government will review existing policies and explore technical and regulatory measures to implement the restriction effectively.
If implemented, the move could become one of the stricter state-level actions in India aimed at regulating social media use among children and teenagers.
