The CBSE is preparing a system to make sports become an important part of education in order to determine the achievements of the students says Kiren Rijiju Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports.

He said that the Prime Minister has announced a plan to set up a board for Sports Education and under the new Education Policy, sports is set to become a part of the education system and the CBSE is preparing to make sure that sports are included as a part of education.

He made the statement after the inauguration of the Dr. N P V Ramaswamy Udayar Hockey Centre at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and University. He further stated that the move to introduce sports in the new education system was due to the treatment of sports as an extra-curricular activity.

Sports was earlier taken as an extra-curricular activity and were not a part of the education system. Under the new initiative sports will not be treated as an extra subject. sports, the minister said is the central part of education adding that his ministry is in touch with the HRD Ministry regarding this matter. The process of including sports into the education system is under preparation and the policy has been accepted. The government is determined to treat sports as a priority which will help the country to excel in sports in the future.

He also said that under the ‘Khelo India’ initiative taken by the ministry the young and talented from across the country will be taken on a massive scale. He added that close to 14000 young boys and girls have been identified and put into different training centres under the scheme and the sports authority of India. The minister also said that the next target for the country is to be in the top 10 in the upcoming Olympics to be held in 2020, 2024 and 2028.
