Tripura board of secondary education was established in 1973, under the act known as Tripura board of secondary education act, 1973 as passed by Tripura legislative assembly. The board started its functioning from 1st of January 1976. The board is responsible for in framing rules and regulations required to run the university board, syllabus or curriculum and other necessary guidelines that are responsible for smooth and active conduct of the business board. Before all these moves, the high and higher secondary schools of Tripura came under the West Bengal board of education. This affiliation under the West Bengal board did not result in providing education to the entire lot. Soon after the setting up of Tripura board, examinations were conducted under the same. After the affiliation, the board of education decided to adopt the syllabus of central board of education for Tripura Board Madhyamikand higher secondary examinations.

Tripura board school education is popularly known as TBSE. Every year there are large numbers of students who appear for the examination for both class 10th and 12th.

In 2013, the time table and the date sheet wasreleased in the last week of December and the examinations were conducted in the month of March. The results of the same were declared in the month of May. Of 859 schools, 99 per cent of the schools managed to have passed the examination and in the rest 14 schools not a single student managed to pass the examination. In all there were 45,848 students who appeared for the examination in class 10th which included seven candidates from correctional homes and 24 physically challenged students. Approximately 2319 students have secured first division, 3639 candidates have got second division, and 15,210 candidates obtained third division. There was a slight increase in the result as compared to the previous year. The board also declared the Madhyamik level Madarasa results. Forty eight students appeared for Madrasa examinations and 34 candidates passed the examination, putting the overall pass percentage at 79.6. The girls outshined the boys again.

The subjects included in Madhyamik are language 1- which includes Bengali, Hindi, Kokborok, Mizo, Arabic and language -2 includes English, science, physics and chemistry combined, life science and social science which includes geography, history, economics, and civics combined. The passing marks of these examinations are 30 marks in each subject.
