Workshop on High-Performance Computing conducted by IIT-Guwahati

Oct 4, 2014 16:06 IST

Recently, a three day workshop on Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) programming and applications conducted by the High-Performance Computing (HPC) group of IIT-Guwahati in their campus. The workshop was jointly conducted with the help of IIT-Bombay and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC). It was inaugurated by professor H P Khincha and S C Sahasrabudhe along with Sukumar Nandi.

More than 150 researches, faculty members, students, industry partners and other members took part in the workshop dealing with many hands-on experiments giving understanding of the GPU programming in detail.

The strategic importance of getting it conducted by IIT-Guwahati is quite interesting. This would help the northeast to maintain the development pace with the rest of the country as the workshop could play an important role in the development of scientific solutions for new research and development work. The workshop could make the HPC more popular in the region and would facilitate research of application in engineering discipline that employs HPC technologies.

HPC can be very useful when it comes to solving real-life problems and could take down the causalities to minimise in several cases. The HPC can be also be very useful in floods and seismic predictions, weather forecasting, oil exploration and live video analysis. This technology can help train the skilled manpower so that they can solve the real life problems more intensively with the use of computers.
