Ratan Tata, the outgoing Chairman of Tata Group was conferred with the honorary title of Chairman Emeritus- by the board of Tata Sons, the holding company of the 100 billion dollar Tata Group on 18 December 2012. Ratan Tata will retire from his office on 28 December 2012 and Cyrus Mistry would be taking over the chair of the group after him on the same day.
Ratan Tata as an honorary chairman will not attend any of the board meetings of Tata Group and would also not have any responsibility towards the company. JRD Tata was conferred with this title honour before Ratan Tata by the Tata Sons. Ratan Tata would continue to be the Chairman of Tata group trusts, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust, which together have 66 per cent stake in Tata Sons.
