Brazilian footballer Ronaldo Luis Nazario Lima on 14 February 2011 announced his retirement from football. At the age of 34 Ronalo has achieved great success in the world’s most popular sport. Series of injuries had prevented him from joining the World Cup in South Africa.
Ronaldo is one of youngest player to have won his World Cup title at the age of 17, as part of Brazil’s first world cup champion team in 1994. Ronaldo was named Fifa World Player of the year for three times, 1996, 1997 and 2002. He is popularly known to the Spanish speaking nationalities as Il Fenomeno meaning the Phenomenon.
Ronaldo played for Brazil in 97 international matches and scored a total of 62 goals. He played for Brazil in four World Cups out of which Brazil won in two-1994 and 2002 World Cups. During the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Ronaldo became the highest goalscorer in the history of the World Cup with his fifteenth goal, surpassing Gerd Müller's previous record of 14. He was a part of the Brazil squad in the 2010 FIFA Worl Cup played in South Africa.
