A cargo ship called MV Rak sank off Mumbai coast on 5 August 2011. This accident increased fears of environmental pollution. The ship was carrying 60000 tons of coal, 290 tons of fuel oil and 50 tons of diesel. The ship was on its way from Tutung in Indonesia to Dahej in Gujarat. It was built in 1984. MV Rak is owned by M/s Delta Shipping Marine Services in Qatar and it is classified with the Lloyd's Register of Shipping.
The oil spill from MV Rak spread beyond the coast of Mumbai, affecting Raigad and Elephanta. The leak occurred due to the ingress of water in the cargo hull.
How the Accident affects Marine Ecology
The oil spill from the ship enters into the food chain. The algae imbibe the oil and this affects entire marine ecology. The Oil spill from MV Rak can damage the mangrove belt in and around Mumbai city. It can also contaminate shores and can be harmful for fishing activity.
