1. (b) Goa 

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on August 31, 2021 that the state will become the first in the country to supply water free of cost to its citizens. The state has launched 'Save Water to Get Free Water' scheme under which households will not be charged for consumption up to 16,000 litres.

2. (a) Ladakh

The world’s highest motorable road at 18,600 ft connecting Leh to the Pangong Lake has been inaugurated in Ladakh by Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal. 

3. (b) September 15th

The Indian government has launched Bharat (BH) series number plates for vehicles to provide relief to vehicle owners and help them avoid the hassle of transferring registration certificates for vehicles while relocating to a different state. The BH number plate will come into effect from September 15, 2021. 

4. (c) Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai

India on August 31, 2021 announced its first formal meeting with the Taliban. India’s ambassador to Qatar Deepak Mittal held talks with Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, the head of Taliban's political office at the Indian embassy in Doha, Qatar's capital over safe return of Indian nationals and preventing anti-India terror activities on Afghan soil. The meeting reportedly lasted for over an hour. 

5. (a) South Africa 

Researchers from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) and KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform in South Africa have informed that the potential variant of interest, C.1.2, was first detected in South Africa in May 2021. As per the study, it could be more transmissible and evade protection provided by the COVID-19 vaccines.

6. (d) 9 years

As per Air Quality Life Index report by the University of Chicago, the people living in Northern India are on track to lose more than 9 years of life expectancy if the air pollution levels of 2019 persist as the region experiences the most extreme levels of air pollution across the world.

7. (a) Joe Root 

England captain Joe Root has reclaimed the top spot for batsmen in the latest ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings. He has reclaimed the top rank after nearly six years.

8. (c) IIT Madras 

IIT Madras has been developing an innovative model to tackle electronic wastes (e-waste) by linking stakeholders in the formal and informal economy. The exchange platform called "e-Source", will serve as an online marketplace for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment and facilitate a formal supply chain between various stakeholders.
