The Delhi government on 13 February 2012 announced medical benefits, financial support and higher compensation packages for various other categories of workers, including those working in industries and covered by the Industrial Workers Act. The benefits are to cover the workers who contribute to the Delhi Labour Welfare Board.
Delhi Labour and Industries Minister Ramakant Goswami who chaired a meeting of the Delhi Labour Welfare Board mentioned that the new benefits have been granted to workers and their family members to provide them a comprehensive social safety mechan.
Under this financial assistance scheme, Rs.20,000 will be sanctioned for treatment of chronic or serious ailments like cancer, brain tumour, heart disease, AIDS, and the like. Apart from this, an amount of Rs.2000 would also be released as compensation in case of death of such workers and Rs.5000 as funeral expenses.
under the financial assistance scheme the Delhi Labour Welfare Board will also help the workers at crucial points in life such as marriage, birth of child and education of children. Rs.10,000 would be paid to workers at the time of their marriage. Similarly, an amount of Rs.5000 will be released as maternity benefit to those female workers who are not covered under ESIC. Further, Rs.5000 will be sanctioned as financial assistance for education to handicapped children of workers.
A number of scholarship schemes were introduced for the workers. Rs.1000 per month would be sanctioned as scholarship to workers for their children studying in Class X, XI and XII.
Rs.1500 per month would be sanctioned as scholarship for polytechnic courses and three year engineering diploma courses to both the workers and their children. an amount of Rs.2,000 per month would be granted for bachelor degree courses in engineering, medicine, law, computer science, agriculture, IT, computer application and other such professional courses.
