Gandhian and economist Lakshmi Chand Jain expired on 14 November 2010. He overwhelmingly opposed state control and an ardently advocated for social action. He spent six decades of his life in fighting against socio-economic oppression. He had served as the Indian High commissioner to South Africa as well as one of the commissioners on the World Bank-backed, World Commission on Dams (WCD).He became a member of the Planning Commission where he served from 1989 to 1990.
Lakshmi Chand Jain role was crucial in the foundation of Indian Cooperative Union and All-India Handicrafts Board. He helped to set up Central Cottage Industries Emporium and Super Bazaar cooperative stores. He documented his struggles as an activist in a book called Civil Disobedience, which is scheduled to be posthumously released on 13 December 2010. Economist, organiser, commentator and activist L.C. Jain was awarded the Magsaysay Award in 1989 for Public Service.
