The Europe India Gateway (EIG) cable system was launched by leading telecom service provider Bharti Airtel along with 16 other global telecommunication companies on 23 February 2011. The Europe India Gateway (EIG) cable system will enhance diversity and capacity between Europe and India.
The 15000-km-long cable project that has a capacity to transmit 3.84 terabits per second had received investment of around $700 million. The EIG stretches from Mumbai to London, with landing points in UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, Egypt, Libya, Monaco, Marseilles, Gibraltar, Portugal and UK.
When fully activated with the Egypt link, the EIG will be the first direct high bandwidth optical fiber system from UK to India. The cable will also help to boost African content connectivity demands by complementing the Eastern African Submarine Cable System (EASSy) which is the largest undersea cable in Africa and in which Bharti holds investments. Bharti will provide network administration and operations control for the EIG.
The EIG Consortium members are: AT&T, Bharti Airtel, BT, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd , Cable&Wireless Worldwide, Djibouti Telecom, Gibtelecom, Libyan Post, Telecom and Information Technology Company, MTN Group Ltd , Omantel , PT Comunicações, S.A, Saudi Telecom Company, Telecom Egypt, Telkom SA Ltd and Verizon.
