International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) on 2 April 2014 rejected the call of US senators to ban Russia from 2014 World Cup in response to Kremlin’s position on Ukraine.
FIFA was requested by Senators Dan Coats, R-Indiana, and Mark Kirk, R-Illinois in a letter requesting it to strip Russia from its right to host the World Cup in 2018. It also asked FIFA to ban it from this year’s edition of the event that will be hosted by Brazil.
Jerome Valcke, the FIFA Secretary General in its comment said that individual teams cannot be banned from the competition due to the actions of their parent states.
At present, Russia is building a large scale project of sports facilities and necessary infrastructure to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
