The Gujarat Government, on 30 March 2011, banned Joseph Lelyveld’s controversial book, entitled Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and his struggle with India. It was alleged in the book that Mahatma Gandhi was a racist and bisexual.


The state assembly of Gujarat passed a resolution to ban the sale, distribution and reprint of the book. The resolution requested the central government to impose a similar ban all over India.
