India on 2nd December 2010, successfully test-fired the super-sonic BrahMos cruise missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipore off Odisha coast. This is part of trials by the Indian defence forces to improve its capability.

• The range of BrahMos is 290 km.
• BrahMos missile can travel 2.8 times the speed of sound carrying conventional warheads up to 300 kg.
• BrahMos is 8.1 metres long and .6 metre wide and its weight is 3000 kg.
• BrahMos missile is jointly developed by India and Russia. It can be launched from several platforms like ships, submarines and aircrafts.
• The name BrahMos is formed from the two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskava of Russia.
• BrahMos is a joint venture between DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) of India and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroeyenia.
• Chandipore is in Balasore district of Odisha.
• The missile was test fired last time on 5th September 2010 from the ITR, Chandipore.
A Missile is an intelligent unmanned rocket designed to carry the payload to a designated point with an aim of destroying the object or the target.
