An Italian parliamentary commission on 2 August 2011 approved a draft law banning women from wearing veils that cover their faces in public.
The draft passed by the constitutional affairs commission prohibits women from wearing a burqa, naqib or any other garb that covers the face.
Italy is the latest European country to approve a law against the burqa. Belgium and France have already banned the wearing of burqa in public.
This recent step banning veil has ignited heated debate about multiculturism in Europe. It’s related to issues of religious freedom, secular traditions, female equality and fears of terrorism.
