The withdrawal of Joe Biden’s candidature from the presidential election has drastically changed the political scenario of the American elections. The race for the White House is now going to happen between Democrat candidate Kamla Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump in what is expected to be a highly competitive and significant election of the year.
Biden declared that he would not run for reelection "in the best interests" of his party and nation on X (formerly known as Twitter). He has declared his support for Kamla Harris as the new Democratic nominee for the presidential election. Harris reacted to his announcement, saying that she was "honoured to have the President's endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination."
Who is Kamla Harris?
Kamala Harris's candidacy is important in American political history because she comes from a diverse background. Kamla Harris was born to Shyama Gopalan, a Tamil biologist, and Donald J. Harris, a Jamaican-American professor in California, US.
In 2020, Harris made history by becoming the first woman, the first African American and the first Asian American to be elected Vice President. After earning degrees in Economics and Political Science, she pursued a law career and joined the Bar Association in 1990. That same year, she began working as a deputy district attorney in California.
