The provisions relating to grant of arms licences was revised by the Centre and the State Government on 3 May 2010 with an objective to curb proliferation of arms. Earlier applications for acquisition of Prohibited Bore (PB) weapons were considered by the Union Home Ministry and applications for acquisition of Non Prohibited Bore (NPB) weapons were considered by the State Government or the District Magistrate concerned. After the revision, applications for grant of PB weapons would in future be considered from only those who face a grave and imminent threat to their lives.
