Reliance Power on 24 October 2010 placed an order of 10000 crore with GE India for turbines, generators and other equipment for a 2400-mw gas-based power plant, Samalkot Expansion Power project. The Samalkot Expansion Power project in Andhra Pradesh is expected to begin generating power by March 2012. This so far is the largest order for GE India. The order includes project outlay of over 10,000 crore. GE will also be providing maintenance services for the power project.
The Samalkot Expansion Power project will use the combined-cycle technology, in which exhaust gas from a gas turbine-generator is converted to steam. The steam is then used to drive a steam turbine-generator thereby enabling the plant to produce additional power without an increase in fuel consumption or emission.
