SCI Launched India-Myanmar Service

Shipping Corporation of India Limited launched India Myanmar Service (IMS) Container service.

Shipping Corporation of India Limited (SCI) on 7 October 2014 launched India Myanmar Service (IMS) Container service that will operate container services from Chennai to Myanmar. The service will link South and East India to Myanmar via Chennai, Krishnapatnam, Yangoon, Colombo port rotation.

The service will boost bilateral trade relations between India and Myanmar by providing immense opportunities for manufacturers, importers and exporters in both countries.

This service will also open new avenues to the traders to the growing markets in India and Myanmar. The service is scheduled to call at Chennai every fortnight.

The service commenced with m.v. SCI KAMAL, a 1200 TEU capacity vessel exclusively for this purpose. Vessel on her maiden call at Chennai carried out a throughput exchange of 200 TEU’s with imports comprising commodities like pulses, timber, furniture etc. and exports comprising cement, general cargo and chemicals.

The Service was a direct derivative of Look East Policy of Union Government to reach in to Mizoram and other North-Eastern States Government by using northern Myanmar, Sittwe port.
Further, Union Government is looking at starting a similar service to countries such as Thailand and Vietnam as part of the Look East policy. Besides, Union Government also will help the shipping industry in Bangladesh.
