John XXIII and John Paul II were declared as saints of the Roman Catholic Church on 27 April 2014 by Pope Francis. This declaration of the two predecessors was made before hundreds of people in St Peter's Square in Vatican City.
This ceremony of declaration became historical by the presence of retired Pope Benedict. As before this reigning and retired Pope has not participated and celebrated Mass together in public. This incident also became important as for the first time the two popes have been canonised at the same time.
As per the analysts, this move is an attempt to unite conservative and reformist camps within the Roman Catholic Church.
