Union Ministry of Environment and forests on 10 November 2011 approved the first stage of Lavasa township project in Pune on the basis of assessment done by an expert committee. The approval was given on the condition that all environmental rules and regulations are followed. The Lavasa township project was disputed due to violating environment law and the case is sub-judiced in Bombay High Court.
Lavasa is a private, planned city being built near Pune. The project is being developed by HCC ( Hindustan Construction Company), the project has been controversial for many reasons including procurement of land, harm to the environment, and loans acquired through political corruption.
In 2010, Union ministry of Environment and Forests requested that construction cease because the environmental laws are violated by the project.
