US Open: Dominic Thiem defeats Alexander Zverev to win men’s singles title

Dominic Thiem from Austria has defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev on September 13, 2020, after making a comeback in the five-set long marathon final 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (6) to win the US Open title.

This was the first US Open final which was decided by a fifth-set-tie break. It also marked the first time in the history of the US Open that a player had recovered from losing the opening two sets to win the title.

Down but never out.

Dominic Thiem wins US Open Title: Key Highlights

•  After losing the first two sets of the match, Dominic Thiem made an exceptional comeback and won the next three sets in a match that lasted for more than four hours.

•  Thiem has become the player to rally from the two-sets down in a US Open Final Scene ever since Pancho Gonzales did it against Ted Schroeder in 1949 at an event which was known as the US Championships.

•  Dominic Thiem has also become the first Grand Slam Champion to be born in the 1990s.

•  With the latest US Open men’s single titles win, Thiem has successfully claimed his maiden Grand Slam Trophy after the three previous defeats in the finals of the Tennis Major.

•  Dominic Thiem has also joined Thomas Muster (1995 Roland Garros) as the only Austrian man to win a major championship.
