A massive explosion rocked Lebanon's capital city Beirut on August 4, 2020. According to reports, around 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored in a Beirut port warehouse exploded, devastating large parts of the city.

2.(a) GC Murmu 
Former Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Girish Chandra Murmu has been appointed as India’s new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). GC Murmu had resigned as J&K Lt Governor on August 5, 2020.

Manoj Sinha took oath as the new Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir on August 7, 2020. The BJP leader will be replacing Girish Chandra Murmu who resigned on August 5, 2020.

4.(b) August 7th 
National Handloom Day was celebrated on August 7, 020 to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement, which was launched on the same date in 1905. The main objective behind celebrating the day is to generate awareness about the Handloom Industry among the public.

Japan marked the 75th anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bomb attack on August 6, 2020. The main event was held at Hiroshima, which saw in attendance survivors and relatives of the victims and few foreign dignitaries. 

6.(a) Uttarakhand 
A snow leopard conservation centre will be set up in the Uttarkashi forest division area in Uttarakhand to promote winter tourism in the state.

Tick-borne SFTS virus has re-emerged in China, killing around 7 people and infecting around 60 others. This was reported on August 5, 2020. With the virus infecting several people, it has raised warning of the possibility of its human-to-human transmission.

Pakistan released its new political map on August 4, 2020. The new map of Pakistan includes Indian territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and parts of western Gujarat. India has rejected the claim, calling it a 'political absurdity.'

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become the first one in the Arab world to produce nuclear energy. The Unit 1 of the Abu Dhabi-based Barakah nuclear power plant has become operational.
