Pope Francis I : The current Pope of the Catholic Church

    Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio has been elected as the first Latin American Pope on 13 March 2013, taking the name of Pope Francis. The nationality of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio is Argentine with Vatican Citizenship. Pope Francis is the 266th and current Pope of the Catholic Church. The papacy of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio began on 13 March 2013. Pope Francis is the first pope to be a Jesuit, to come from the Americas from the Southern Hemisphere.


    Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born on 17 December 1936 (age 76) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The predecessor of Pope Francis was Pope Benedict XVI.  Pope Benedict XVI  resigned on 28 February 2013. Cardinal Jorge Mario  Bergoglio was elected pope on the second day of the  2013 papal conclave. Pope Francis serves as the 266th Pope.  Pope Francis is both the leader of the Catholic Church and sovereign ruler of the Vatican City state.


    Pope francis has only one lung, the other was removed after an infection when he was a teenager. In 2001, Bergoglio visited a hospice, where he kissed and washed the feet of 12 victims. Pope Francis was born and raised in Buenos Aires, his parents were Italian immigrants. Pope Francis was elected pope after receiving a two-thirds majority from the 115 cardinals on the fifth ballot vote during the second day of the papal conclave.
