The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina has resigned recently. The Prime Minister left her residence in Dhaka and left the country, as the protesters angrily came on the streets to defy the curfew orders. The Bangladesh Army will be creating the interim government with the aid of the political parties.

In a televised address, Waqar-uz-Zaman, the Bangladesh Army chief General states that they will be creating an interim government through the help of the political parties.

On the other hand, the protestors entered the official residence of the Prime Minister in Dhaka, angrily. The situation seems to be fluid. What does the exit of Sheikh Hasina mean for India?

What is the situation in Bangladesh?

For the last month, the country has been seeing protests over the job quota system. The protests had been the biggest since the re-election of Hasina for the fourth term since the year 2008.

The Prime Minister had overseen economic growth in Bangladesh. However, she had also taken authoritarian and harsh actions against the political opposition, the civil society organizations, and the media.

This made the Prime Minister unpopular, especially among the youth. The youth protested on the streets against the Prime Minister. The exit of the Prime Minister means a great challenge for the economy of the country. Bangladesh is yet to move on from the Covid pandemic.

What does the Prime Minister's exit imply for India?

The Prime Minister remained in the position for 17 years. The departure after this long period of tenure implies that India has lost a trusted partner, as the Prime Minister held friendly relations with India.

India has closely worked with Hasina on tackling terrorist groups operating from Bangladesh.

The partnership between India and Hasina brought the two nations together. Moreover, India had given assistance to Bangladesh for multiple projects.

In case Hasina lands in India, this would mean that the latter will now have to work to ensure her safety. India will also be obliged then to face certain questions from the new regime in Dhaka about providing refuge to an unpopular leader.

Can similar strong ties be formed with the new government?

India has shown that it still engages with the interim government, and will continue to do so with any future elected government in Dhaka. Pranay Verma, the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka attended the swearing-in ceremony of the new interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus.

Despite all these efforts, there are a few issues that make India's ties with the new regime in Bangladesh complex. First things first, the presence of Ms. Hasina in India is seen with great suspicion in Dhaka. S. Jaishankar, the External Affairs Minister said in a statement in the Parliament that she has arrived in India simply "for the moment". This implies that India would want Hasina to travel elsewhere until the anti-Hasina sentiments in Bangladesh cool down. However, situations might get trickier in case the new government demands her extradition there.
