In the year 2022, the registered cyber-crime cases in the country have increased by 24.4 percent, as compared to the year before, as suggested by the very recent report titled "Crime in India", presented by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The crime rate has seen a surge (per lakh population) to 4.8 in the year 2022 from 3.9 in the year 2021.

A consistent rise in cyber crimes has been recorded in India. The number of cases in 2020 was 50,035. The next year, i.e., 2021, the number of cases increased to 52,974. As per the report, the year 2022 saw a total of 65,893 recorded cases.

The highest number of cyber crimes has been seen in the state of Telangana. What is even more alarming is the fact that the state of Telangana has recorded the highest cybercrime cases for the second year in a row. The state saw a rise to 15,297 recorded cases in 2022, whereas the number of cases was 10,303 in the year 2021. This accounts for a 48.5 percent increase in the number of cyber-crime cases in the state. A total cyber crime rate of 40.3 has been touched by the state of Telangana. This rate has surpassed the national cyber-crime rate of 4.8.

After Telangana, the state of Karnataka stands in the second position, holding a crime rate of 18.6. Following Karnataka, comes Andaman and Nicobar Islands with a crime rate of 7. The next on the list stand Maharashtra and Goa, with a crime rate of 6.6 and 5.7 respectively.

What is even more surprising and disturbing is the fact the state of Sikkim also holds 26 registered cases in 2022, where it reported no cyber cases in 2020 and 2021.

What could be the motive behind these cyber crimes?

In the year 2022, around 42,710 cases, which actually account for 64.8%, had an intention of fraud as their main intent. There were 3,648 cases involving extortion, and 3,434 cases involving sexual exploitation.

Karnataka was the state holding the highest number of cases involving fraud as the intent. There were 11,025 reported cases in the state. Telangana was the second on the list with 10,991 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 5,515 such cases.

The most number of cases that involved sexual exploitation was from the state of Maharashtra. Uttar Pradesh reported 542 cyber crime cases that involved sexual exploitation, while Karnataka reported 338 such cases.
