Calling all WhatsApp users! Those days of straining to hear voice notes in unfamiliar languages might soon be over. According to reports, WhatsApp is gearing up to introduce a feature that will transcribe voice notes into text, with Hindi being one of the languages on the list!

The feature was noticed by WABetaInfo, and it mentions: “In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.7.8 update, we announced that WhatsApp was working on a feature to transcribe voice notes. This feature is designed to allow users to transcribe voice notes directly within the app in the future, enhancing accessibility and convenience for those who prefer reading text over listening to voice messages.”

This feature will allow users to transcribe their messages in five languages: English, Hindi, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, and Spanish.

What are the Benefits of Transcribe Voice Notes Feature?

This new feature promises several advantages:

  • Accessibility for All: For users who prefer reading text over listening to audio, voice note transcription will be a game-changer. It can also be a boon for people with hearing difficulties.
  • Language Barriers Be Gone: No more struggling to understand voice notes in languages you don't speak. Transcriptions will bridge the communication gap, fostering smoother interactions.
  • Convenience on the Go: Quickly scan through transcribed voice notes while commuting or in situations where listening isn't feasible.

WABetaInfo states: “Offering the option to choose the language of voice transcripts brings significant advantages to the user experience, as it will enhance accessibility for users who communicate in different languages. This will ensure that users can read and understand voice notes in their preferred language. In addition, it will improve the accuracy of transcriptions by using language-specific speech recognition. It’s worth noting that users will have the flexibility to choose a different language for specific voice notes as needed.”

How Will the WhatsApp Transcribe Voice Notes Feature Work?

Here are the steps on how WhatsApp will transcribe voice notes, according to the WABetaInfo:

  • Download Additional Data: To use transcription, users will need to download a separate data package of about 150MB.
  • End-to-End Encryption: This download will provide the necessary resources for on-device speech recognition, ensuring your voice messages are transcribed entirely on your device. This maintains end-to-end encryption, meaning no one else (including WhatsApp) can access the voice data or transcriptions.
  • Local Transcription: The speech recognition process will happen on your device, not on a remote server.
  • Integrated Transcripts: Once downloaded, transcribed text will appear within the chat bubble alongside the voice note, allowing you to read the message even in situations where playing audio isn't possible.

While there's no official release date yet, the feature being spotted in beta testing suggests it's on the horizon. Keep an eye out for updates in the coming months, and get ready to experience a whole new level of convenience in your WhatsApp communication.
