That’s almost twice the size of Arizona, 44% larger than California, and just a little bigger than all of metropolitan France!”

The island is majorly famous for its red-colored soil. When seen from above or even while travelling across the country, large parts of the land appear reddish. This is mainly due to the presence of iron-rich soil that gives the ground its bright red colour.

Because of this amazing feature, Madagascar earned the nickname “Red Island.”

The nickname “Red Island” mainly reflects the colour of the soil found across many regions of Madagascar.

First of all, much of Madagascar’s land contains laterite soil, which is rich in iron and aluminium. When this type of soil is exposed to air and rainfall, it becomes reddish in colour. As a result, large parts of the island appear red or reddish-brown.
