The Karnataka government has proposed a complete ban on social media use for children under the age of 16, aiming to address growing concerns about online safety and digital addiction among minors. The proposal was announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during the presentation of the state budget, raising discussions across the country about regulating children’s access to digital platforms.

This proposal was shared during the presentation of the state budget and aims to address growing concerns about children’s safety online.  This move has started a nationwide conversation about how young people use social media and whether stricter rules are needed to protect them from online risks.

Why the Government Wants to Ban Social Media for Kids?

According to the state government, the proposed ban is mainly focused on protecting children from the negative effects of excessive social media use. Authorities believe that many children spend long hours on digital platforms, which can affect their mental health, studies, and overall well-being. Some of the important concerns which were highlighted were:-

  • Increases the cases of cyberbullying

  • Digital addiction among teenagers

  • Reduces focus on academic and physical activities

  • Exposure to inappropriate or harmful content.

The government believes that restricting access at a young age may help children develop healthier digital habits.

What Can Happen Next?

The proposal is still at an early stage, and the government is expected to release detailed guidelines on how the ban would be implemented. Authorities may also consult with technology-related companies, educators, and child development experts before finalising the rules.

  • If the plan moves forward, Karnataka could become one of the second regions in India to introduce such strict restrictions after Andhra Pradesh on social media use by minors.

  • However, experts say that enforcing the rule may be a bit challenging, especially because many children can easily access online platforms through different devices.

As discussions continue, the proposal highlights the growing need to balance digital access with children’s safety in today’s technology-driven world.
