The Kerala state government as per media reports has decided to move the Supreme Court to challenge the high fee structure set by the self-financing medical colleges. State Health Minister KK Shailaja has stated that the senior advocates of the supreme court will be appointed to represent the state government.
The minister while speaking to the media stated that it is not acceptable that some of the managements try to disrupt admissions every year by setting a high fee structure and this is a challenge for the students.
The fee regulatory committee had fixed the fee structure ranging from Rs. 6.32 lakh to Rs. 7.65 lakh for the MBBS courses in different self-financing colleges for the 2020-21 academic year. However, some of the self-financing medical colleges are demanding fees more than Rs. 20 Lakh. The state government is hence moving the Supreme Court against the high fee which according to the state health department will make higher education difficult for the students.
Kerala High Court Order
The Kerala High Court has earlier instructed the fee regulatory committee to re-evaluate the fee structure fixed and asked to inform the students that they may have to pay the maximum fee demanded by the college management. The high court had stated that this year's fee will be based on the final order of the court or any other court-entrusted authority and in case there is a hike in the fee the students will have to pay the amount. The High Court has also asked the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations to issue a notification regarding the fee structure.
