The UPSC will conduct the CDS (II) Exam 2017 on 19 November 2017. For the benefit of aspirants, Jagran Josh is providing the following questions on synonyms. The answers along with explanations as given below will help the candidates in understanding the nature of the questions in the exam.
Directions for the following ten items:
Each item consists of a word in capital letters followed by four words or groups of words. Select the word or groups of words that is most similar in meaning to the word in capital letters.
(a) lose heart
The meaning of the word deplore means – expressing strong condemnation of something. An appropriate synonym for the word is – regret.
Synonyms for the word ‘Motivation’ are – motive, stimulus, stiumulation, inspiration, impulse, inducement, incitement, provocation, etc.
Residue means a small amount of something that remains after the main part has gone or been taken or used. Remainder is an appropriate word to denote this meaning.

Emancipation setting free whether it is from poverty, illiteracy, legal, social or social restrictions. Its synonyms are – free, liberate, release, discharge, etc.
Hostility is the state of ill will and bad feeling. Its synonyms are – bitterness, unkindness, anger, hatred, etc.
Forbid means refuse to allow something. Its synonyms are – ban, outlaw, veto, proscribe, exclude, etc.
Ambiguous means which is open to more than one interpretation. Its synonyms are – equivocal, ambivalent, debatable, arguable, etc.
