The Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) will be India’s first business school to be recognized by the two top B-school accreditation bodies of the world – one is Europe based Association of MBAs (AMBA) and another is Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
An inspection team from AMBA is shortly to visit the Joka campus on January 14-15 before it gives a green signal of approval. Whereas, the odds of AACSB team visiting the campus are in June 2014.
Notably, IIM-C is the only campus that enjoys an AACSB accreditation, now additional AMBA certification will act as a cherry on the cake since it will enhance IIM-C by offering it the double pride through "dual crown".
A year ago, IIT-Cboard of governors had decided to compete for these accreditations to enhance the global recognition of their institute. Subsequently, the two bodies were approached for specifications and lofty details about the institute's achievements and regular activities were provided. Now the AMBA team will arrive at the campus to validate and cross-check those details besides, interacting with both faculty members as well as students.
In the past, IIM-Ahmedabad and IIM-Bangalore outshoneCalcutta and received an accreditation from Equis, which also a top accreditation agency. Nevertheless, none of the IIM-A or B could receive a double accreditation as yet.Now, the IIM-C is likely to set a benchmark for other top IIM’s, mainly for the A &B IIM’s to reach.
Anindya Sen, IIM-C dean (academic) expressed their excitement and told that 4 experts will arrive at their campus for 2 days in the following week who will assess the information the IIM-C have furnished. He added that AMBA experts may also give the institute directions on how to position itself as a global institute in order to attract more students from abroad.
Director of IIM-C, Saibal Chattopadhyay said that the institute has plans on building a global repute and is also focusing on its international positioning. Therefore, AMBA-AACSB recognition bringing a good news is the first step towards attaining those goals.
