The State of Jharkhand came into existence on the 15 November 2000 and Jharkhand Academic Council was established by an Act proposed by the Jharkhand State Legislature. It was assented by the Governor of the State on 26 December 2003, which was known as Jharkhand Academic Council Act 2 July 2003.
With the establishment of the JAC, the Bihar Intermediate Education Council Act 1992, the Bihar School Examination Board Act 1952 (adapted as Jharkhand Secondary Examination Board Act 2000) Bihar Sanskrit Education Board Act 1981 and Bihar Board of Madrasa Education Board Acts, 1981 were repealed.
The Jharkhand Academic Council was constituted by HRD Department Government of Jharkhand Vide Notification No. 2/1-72/06 E.d.n 90 dated 07-06-2007. The Chairman of Jharkhand Academic Council, Ranchi is Smt. Lakshmi Singh.
The Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) was established for holding and conducting examinations at the end of Intermediate Education, Secondary Education, Sanskrit Education and Madrasa Education. Besides this, JAC also prescribes courses of studies for such examinations and recommends recognition of Intermediate Educational Institutions, High Schools, Sanskrit Schools and Madrasas to the State Government. In addition, it also carries out duties assigned to the council by the State Govt from time to time.
Another leap forward was taken when the CBSE curriculum was introduced from the primary stage to the Intermediate stage to enable our students to partake in the main current of the national education-programme freely and naturally.
The JAC started functioning in a rented house in Rameshwaram and the Secondary portion continued to function in Zila School Ranchi campus. The present office of JAC was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Chief Minister Sri Arjun Munda on 13 December 2003 under the Chairmanship of the then HRD Minister Sri Pashupati Nath Singh.
The Jharkhand Academic Council declared its Class 12 (XII) results on 1 June 2012 at 11.30 am for Annual Intermediate Examination, Intermediate Vocational Examination and Madhyama (Sanskrit) Examination. The Jharkhand Board conducted the 12th class examination from 22 February 2012 to 17 March 2012.
On 10 May 2012, the Jharkhand Academic Council declared Class 10 (X) results for Annual Secondary School Examination. The Jharkhand Board conducted the 10th class examination from 22 February 2012 to 5 March 2012.
