In a revolutionary decision the Supreme Court on 9 August 2011 made it mandatory for all public agencies in India that conduct any educational or professional examination to disclose to the student her answer sheets under Right to Information Act.
The Bench of Justices RV Raveendran and AK Patnaik gave this ruling while upholding the Calcutta High Court order which allowed students to see their answer sheets of any professional or educational exam once the result was declared. Several bodies including CBSE and West Bengal Board of Secondary Education had contended the 2009 Calcutta High Court order.
The judgment can bring about much needed reforms and transparency in the examination system of the country.
